feat(api): abort signal support for gemini, mistral, lite-llm (completePrompt + createMessage) - #1303
Add abort-signal support to the Gemini, Mistral, and LiteLLM providers.
Changes
gemini.ts
completePrompt: forwards CompletePromptOptions.abortSignal to GenerateContentConfig.abortSignal and timeoutMs to httpOptions.timeout (httpOptions is omitted entirely when nothing is set). On catch, a user-initiated abort re-throws as a standard DOMException with name = "AbortError".
createMessage: bridges metadata.abortSignal into a request-local AbortController passed to the SDK via config.abortSignal. A pre-aborted signal rejects immediately with AbortError; the abort listener is stored in a named const and removed in finally.
mistral.ts
completePrompt: forwards abortSignal via fetchOptions.signal and timeoutMs to the Mistral SDK RequestOptions (options arg omitted when empty, preserving the legacy 1-arg call shape). Abort normalization in catch as above.
createMessage: same request-local controller bridging as Gemini; the stream call only receives { fetchOptions: { signal } } when a signal is present.
lite-llm.ts
completePrompt: forwards abortSignal via OpenAI.RequestOptions.signal; timeoutMs is only forwarded when > 0 because the OpenAI SDK treats a 0 timeout as an immediate abort.
createMessage: same bridging pattern; the in-flight chat.completions.create(...).withResponse() call receives the request signal alongside the existing X-Zoo-Session-ID header.
vertex.ts: unchanged — VertexHandler inherits the new behavior from GeminiHandler.
New createMessage bridging regression tests per provider: pre-aborted signal rejects immediately with name = "AbortError" (no SDK call), and a mid-flight external abort propagates into the in-flight request and surfaces as AbortError on the stream.
Mistral spec additionally covers timeoutMs: 0 forwarding (valid for the Mistral SDK, which uses a truthy check) and no-signal call-shape preservation.
Vertex spec verifies the inherited bridging behavior.
All 5 specs green; tsc --noEmit and per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean.
Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404.
Review feedback addressed (2026-09-11)
Per @edelauna's review, this revision leverages the shared abort-signal work already on main:
Catch normalization: all six catch sites (gemini / mistral / lite-llm, createMessage + completePrompt) now use isRequestAborted(error, signal) — which also catches SDK-native abort errors that surface before the signal flag propagates — and throw via createAbortError(<provider>).
Tests: new per-provider regression tests pin the SDK-native-abort branch; the listener-identity assertions now assert that no manual listeners are attached to the external signal.
Series alignment check (zdt align check)
exit 0 — 0 ERROR. Findings recorded, not refactored:
3 WARN — statically unguarded first-yield sites (gemini fallback-text / lite-llm reasoning /
mistral string-content yields). A guard before the FIRST yield of a loop iteration is dead code:
the top-of-loop break runs without a suspension point before it, so it can never throw. The
loop-top check + post-loop AbortError cover those sites; the structural kill-tests pin them.
2 DIVERGENCE — per-method mechanism signature across the series (bridging builder + signal
discovery: gemini/mistral vs bare for lite-llm createMessage/completePrompt). Recorded as a
design decision; aligning would widen this PR beyond its unit.
Review feedback addressed (2026-09-23)
Per the CodeRabbit out-of-diff finding on cold-cache model discovery (LiteLLMHandler.createMessage awaits fetchModel() before the abort check):
The fetchModel() awaits in both createMessage and completePrompt now race against the request signal via rejectOnAbort (the shared series helper in utils/abort-signal.ts), and an abort landing while discovery fails is normalized to the standard AbortError via isRequestAborted + createAbortError("LiteLLM").
fetchModel() itself is a shared single-flight lookup, so it carries no per-request signal; cancellation is expressed per-request at the caller, and the underlying discovery keeps running so concurrent requests still get the populated cache.
New head: f0f1fa5b9. Tests: 91 green across lite-llm.spec.ts (66, incl. the pending-discovery + abort regression) and abort-signal.spec.ts (25, incl. the rejectOnAbort contract); tsc --noEmit and per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; local Stryker preflight on the unit delta (base 0ec250e3d): 226 valid mutants, 226 killed, PASS.
CI note (2026-09-28)
Merged upstream/main into the branch (head 4f746b855) to clear drift; no code change from this unit.
e2e-mock failed at 4f746b855 solely on the upstream Markdown List Rendering suite (3 tests, 30s waitUntilCompleted timeout); every other required check was green. The same failure signature (same suite, same timeout) occurred in the same CI window on two unrelated external forks, and the previous head of this branch passed e2e-mock with the identical test file present. This PR's diff touches no e2e or mock content.
Empty commit 0388aeccd re-triggers the workflow (no content change). That run failed only on the restart-persistence step (verify-phase TaskMessagesReadError — the single 1-10ms ENOENT retry in readFileWithMissingRetry lost the race under CI load — then a 30s history-sequence poll timeout); the identical tree passed that step in the previous run, and the e2e-mock workflow shows chronic cross-fork flakiness over recent weeks.
Second empty commit c299aa213 re-triggers the workflow.
Review feedback addressed (2026-10-13)
Responding to the maintainer's two inline comments on fork PR 1303. New head: b94c13c1f.
LiteLLM absolute deadline (lite-llm.ts, completePrompt): the timeout was previously forwarded to the OpenAI SDK only as the per-attempt timeout option while the SDK's default two retries stayed enabled — each retry adds a backoff sleep that is not signal-aware, so a 30ms budget could elapse ~1,530ms across three attempts, exceeding the promised discovery-plus-completion budget. One absolute deadline (start + timeoutMs) is now enforced THROUGH the completion call: a deadline signal for the remaining budget is merged with the caller's signal and passed as the SDK call's signal (in-flight attempts abort at the deadline; the SDK's next attempt short-circuits at its pre-flight signal.aborted check), and because the SDK's retry sleep is not signal-aware, the call is additionally raced against the deadline via rejectOnAbort so the caller settles at the deadline even mid-backoff. Retries stay enabled within the remaining budget. Timeout expiry stays distinct from caller cancellation: deadline expiry with the caller still running surfaces as TimeoutError ("The LiteLLM completion request timed out") and never masquerades as the cancellation AbortError (the SDK reports deadline expiry as an abort-shaped APIUserAbortError); a caller abort still yields the standard AbortError and wins when both fire. Three regression tests pin this (real-SDK integration test with a hanging fetch stub asserting one attempt / bounded elapsed / TimeoutError; deadline expiry reported as a timeout, not caller cancellation; caller cancellation still AbortError), and the merged signal+timeout test now pins the deadline-bounded signal the SDK receives. Negative control: reverting the fix turns exactly those tests red.
Gemini HTTPS-only endpoint policy carved out: the assertSecureGeminiBaseUrl policy (helpers plus both call-site guards) and its CWE-319 security test matrix now live in their own PR — upstream PR 2033 (branch feat/gemini-https-endpoint-policy, base main) — because the policy changes which custom endpoints are accepted independently of cancellation. This branch keeps cancellation content only: the remaining Gemini diff is the abort-signal bridging and httpOptions timeout forwarding.
Refreshed against upstream main: merged current main to clear the dirty state. The only conflict was the tail of lite-llm.spec.ts (both sides appended blocks; kept both — main's model-catalog scope test and this branch's completePrompt suite). Main's model-cache changes (fetchModels / getModelCacheScope on the ApiHandler interface) auto-merged cleanly alongside this branch's abort changes.
Verification at this head: 209 tests green across all six specs this PR touches (gemini, gemini-handler, mistral, vertex, lite-llm, request-timeout); tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with no suppression-count changes; prettier --check clean on all touched files.
The re-review at head b94c13c1f opened three threads; all fixed at head d382f33c1.
Weak assertions in the gemini stream-failure tests (assertion identity): both non-abort stream-failure tests now pin the wrapping path by its observable shape — a NEW Error instance (not the raw SDK error), a non-raw message, and a non-AbortError name — so neither a removed wrapper (raw rethrow) nor an abort-path misclassification can pass. Design-contract note: the proposed exact t("common:errors.gemini.generate_stream", ...) equality is not assertable in this environment — i18next is not initialized with resources in unit tests (documented in this spec's sibling telemetry test), so t() returns undefined and the provider's wrapped message is ""; the proposed toBe(t(...)) compares undefined against "" and fails on green code. Negative control: raw-rethrow and abort-misclassification mutations each turn exactly these two tests red; byte-exact restore returns them green.
Fake-timer leak risk (cleanup terminal paths): the merged-signal test body is wrapped in try/finally with vi.useRealTimers() in the finally block, matching the neighbouring tests; a failed assertion can no longer leak fake timers into the deadline or discovery-timeout tests.
Equivalent ConditionalExpression mutant (lite-llm deadline signal branch): collapsed to callerAbortSignal ? mergeAbortSignals(callerAbortSignal, deadlineSignal) : deadlineSignal — mergeAbortSignals returns the primary signal directly when no secondary exists, so all four caller/deadline combinations behave exactly as before and the guarded branch's equivalent mutant is gone; the ternary's own mutants are killed by the existing caller-only and deadline-only tests. No behavior change in production code.
Verification at this head: 129/129 green across gemini.spec.ts + lite-llm.spec.ts; local mutation preflight on the unit delta green (240 valid / 240 killed / 0 survived / 0 noCoverage); tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with no suppression-count changes; prettier --check clean on all touched files.
Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Six directives removed (gemini.ts 1, lite-llm.ts 4, mistral.ts 1):
OptionalChaining on requestSignal?.aborted (x3): requestSignal is the result of the merged-signal helper called unconditionally above the check in the same method scope, so the optional chain can never observe nullish - the mutant is equivalent by a local invariant.
StringLiteral on the race's providerName "LiteLLM" (x3): every error escaping rejectOnAbort/the deadline race is reclassified to the contract abort error before reaching callers, so the provider label embedded in the intermediate error is unobservable through any public path.
Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.
Fractional-timeout rounding wave
Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).
Also (lite-llm): getRequestTimeoutMs rejects non-finite values and rounds up; remainingMs clamped to [1, 2^31-1] whole ms before the deadline signal and before forwarding as createOptions.timeout. Regression test covers 1500.5 / Infinity / 2^31.
Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)
The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).
Gemini, LiteLLM, and Mistral requests handle cancellation more consistently, stop streamed output after cancellation, and fail promptly if canceled before starting.
Timeout errors are distinguished from caller cancellations. Configured time limits apply to completion requests and, for LiteLLM, include model discovery.
Vertex streaming requests canceled before starting are rejected, and cancellation signals are forwarded for prompt completion.
Compatibility
Prompt completion continues to work when no request options are provided.
Gemini, LiteLLM, Mistral, and Vertex provider paths now handle abort signals in prompt completion or streaming. LiteLLM applies a deadline across model discovery and completion. Shared helpers normalize timeout values and create phase-specific timeout errors. Tests and lint rules cover these behaviors.
Adds helpers to normalize positive finite timeout values and create phase-specific TimeoutError instances. Tests cover timeout boundaries and error properties.
LiteLLM discovery and completion deadlines src/api/providers/lite-llm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/lite-llm.spec.ts
LiteLLM races model discovery and completion against caller cancellation and deadlines. It forwards the remaining timeout to the SDK. Tests cover discovery, retries, streaming, and error handling.
Gemini and Mistral handle signals and timeouts during prompt completion. Tests cover pre-aborted requests, request configuration, error handling, and calls without options. Vertex and Gemini handler tests cover signal forwarding and compatibility.
Gemini, LiteLLM, and Mistral pass request signals to streaming SDKs and stop processing output after cancellation. Tests cover abort handling, stream content, usage chunks, response handling, and error capture.
Abort-error and provider spec hygiene src/api/providers/fetchers/modelCache.ts, packages/config-eslint/api-provider-hygiene.js, packages/config-eslint/api-provider-hygiene.test.js, src/eslint.config.mjs
Model-cache waiters use createAbortError. ESLint rules flag hand-built abort errors and restrict @ts-ignore in provider specs, with tests for the rules.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to a9d18
The cancellation paths address the previously identified discovery and retry-backoff failures. The change is mergeable after normal checks; remaining suggestions improve lint and regression coverage without correcting a demonstrated production failure.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 6ac0f
Cancellation remains scoped to individual requests, and configured destinations gain a transport safeguard. No material security regression was established, but cancellation during the handoff from discovery to request execution remains partly dependent on external behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The evidenced reach includes individual provider requests, inherited Vertex behavior, and concurrent callers sharing LiteLLM discovery. Request-local cancellation does not acquire authority to abort other callers' shared discovery. Broader dependent and environment exposure was not exhaustively established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Gemini constructs an authenticated SDK client from configured credentials and applies the new transport gate to custom request destinations. The gate narrows accepted transports without selecting or granting new credential authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Cancellation at LiteLLM's discovery-to-request handoff relies on the SDK honoring an already-aborted signal. The adapter forwards that signal, providing counterevidence to unintended dispatch, but no independent dispatch guarantee was verified. This remains a bounded assurance gap, not an established security regression.

Explanation
The description gives detailed implementation changes, linked issue information through #404, test coverage, validation results, and reviewer context. It does not use every template heading or complete the checklist, but the required information is mostly present.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure condition. The provider changes add abort-signal and timeout handling only: Gemini still validates custom base URLs before requests (gemini.ts:361-365, 709-714), timeout values are finite and positive before forwarding (request-timeout.ts:11-14), and request options carry signals rather than credentials or executable input (gemini.ts:429, mistral.ts:122-124, lite-llm.ts:543-546). The Gemini tool allowlist logic is unchanged and still restricts selected names (gemini.ts:394-410). The remaining production change only replaces a locally built abort error with createAbortError in modelCache.ts:392.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The production diff changes abort handling, timeout construction, request signals, stream cancellation, and one model-cache waiter error from a hand-built AbortError to createAbortError. It does not change persistence writes, atomicity, rollback, or persisted-default propagation. The existing model-cache write path remains outside the changed hunk.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The standing regression finding remains unresolved. The changed Mistral iterator-error path constructs ApiProviderError(errorMessage, this.providerName, model, "createMessage") at src/api/providers/mistral.ts:202-204. The two added iterator-failure tests at src/api/providers/__tests__/mistral.spec.ts:456-487 verify the wrapped rejection, one telemetry call, and only a partial message match. They do not verify provider: "Mistral", modelId: mockOptions.apiModelId ("codestral-latest"), or operation: "createMessage".
Resolution
Update both iterator-failure tests to inspect the captured ApiProviderError. Assert the exact message ("stream exploded" or "42"), provider: "Mistral", modelId: mockOptions.apiModelId, and operation: "createMessage". Keep the mapped completion-error and one-telemetry-call assertions.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed LiteLLM discovery paths still retain work after caller cancellation. createMessage at src/api/providers/lite-llm.ts:176-179 and completePrompt at :459-463 call this.fetchModel() without a signal, then wrap it with rejectOnAbort. On a cold cache, RouterProvider.fetchModel() calls getModels() without options.signal (src/api/providers/router-provider.ts:77-109), so the model-cache flight keeps its waiter, provider fetch, and timeout listener after the caller's abort. rejectOnAbort also leaves its abort listener attached until the underlying promise settles (src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts:168-189); a never-settling discovery promise therefore retains that listener indefinitely. The changed tests use never-settling discovery promises at src/api/providers/__tests__/lite-llm.spec.ts:1847-1857 and :2042-2049, which demonstrate the triggering path.
Resolution
Add a signal-aware model-discovery API and use it from both LiteLLM methods. Pass each request's signal to the model-cache single-flight as a per-request waiter. Detach that waiter immediately when the request aborts or completes. When the last waiter detaches, abort the provider fetch, remove the flight entry, clear its timeout and abort listeners, and safely consume any late rejection. Preserve the shared flight while another request remains joined.

Extract the abort-signal bridge into one shared helper. All three providers repeat the same block: check aborted, throw a DOMException with name = "AbortError", create a controller, register a { once: true } listener, and remove it in finally. The shared root cause is the missing helper. A single helper also keeps the abort message format and the listener cleanup consistent, and it drops the abort reason in one place instead of three.
A helper such as bridgeAbortSignal(signal, label) returning { signal, dispose } covers all three call sites.

Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction
This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.
Status: migration in the post-merge adoption PR. The refactor is mechanical (call-site substitution through the builder with a typed TOptions variant) and is deliberately kept out of this PR to preserve its already-green CI and review state.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.
Round 1 — final status: all checks green, changed-line coverage verified
Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). gemini / mistral / lite-llm abort wiring + shared timeout helper.
Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.
Final head:4a1307248 (rebased onto main 252c69b52)
Work in this round: abort bridging in all three providers (request-local controllers, listener cleanup in finally, catch normalization to AbortError) plus the shared utils/request-timeout.ts helper (getRequestTimeoutMs) implementing the series-wide timeoutMs > 0 guard so a zero/undefined timeout never reaches the SDKs.
Config builder: migration of the call sites to RequestConfigBuilder is scheduled for the post-merge adoption PR (see the config-builder status comment on this PR).

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.
Replace raw gemini apiProvider literals in the two abort-signal spec cases with providerIdentifiers.gemini, matching the rest of the file and the zoo/no-raw-provider-identifiers rule that CI lint enforces.

Review items dispositioned at the current head (e368a1dbf)
isRequestAborted in the catch blocks — gemini, mistral, and lite-llm now use isRequestAborted(error, signal) in both createMessage and completePrompt catches (it covers the signal flag and SDK-native abort names), instead of a bare signal?.aborted check.
RequestConfigBuilder.addMergedSignal — the duplicated 15-line bridge blocks are gone: all three providers build request options through the shared builder (requestBuilder.addMergedSignal(new AbortController(), metadata)), which uses the series helper and needs no per-provider listener cleanup.
Deadline through the SDK retry sequence + caller cancellation during retry backoff — completePrompt now derives the remaining budget, merges the caller signal with the deadline signal, and races the SDK request against the merged signal (rejectOnAbort), so a caller abort during the SDK's non-signal-aware retry sleep settles immediately; deadline expiry is classified first as TimeoutError. Tests: settles caller cancellation during a non-signal-aware SDK retry sleep (settles on abort, attempt=1), the real-SDK probe with a hanging fetch (elapsed < 1000ms, TimeoutError), and reports deadline expiry as a timeout, not as caller cancellation.
HTTPS-only endpoint policy split — that validation is no longer part of this PR's diff: the current git diff upstream/main -- src/api/providers/gemini.ts contains only the abort-signal work, so there is nothing to extract.
Review follow-ups: completePrompt distinguishes a per-request timeout (createTimeoutError) from a caller abort and pins it with a fake-timer RequestTimeoutError test; createMessage checks the merged request signal so a plain error after cancellation surfaces as AbortError; the wider stream try is documented. mistral.spec 48 passed.
Mistral timeout classification — completePrompt now hoists the merged abort+timeout signal and, when it fired, classifies the first cause: a caller abort → contract AbortError; a per-request timeout the caller did not cause → createTimeoutError("Mistral", "completion request"). The Mistral SDK's RequestTimeoutError no longer falls through to captureException/completion error. Added a deterministic fake-timer test (mocked AbortSignal.timeout, SDK rejects RequestTimeoutError) asserting TimeoutError and no telemetry.
createMessage abort classification — the catch now checks isRequestAborted(error, requestSignal) (the merged request signal) instead of only the caller signal, so a plain SDK error arriving after a cancellation still surfaces as AbortError. Added a test where a plain Error("socket closed") is thrown after controller.abort().
Timeout test — the deadline test now drives the merged signal deterministically (mocked AbortSignal.timeout + fake timers, restored in finally), asserts the visible error name (TimeoutError), and no longer waits on a real 200 ms timer.
Wider try scope (documented) — the createMessage catch deliberately wraps both the stream open and the consumption loop so a mid-stream non-abort failure is reported once as a Mistral completion error and captured for telemetry; a comment now states this.
Note on the shared gap: gemini.ts and lite-llm.ts already pass the external/merged signal to isRequestAborted, so a plain SDK error after cancellation classifies as AbortError there too; the new mistral test pins the helper contract.

Review follow-up: capture the reject callback, advance the timeout and abort the caller before rejecting, so the timeout-first classification assertion is meaningful. mistral.spec 50 passed.
The timeout-first test now controls when the mocked completePrompt request rejects: it advances the fake timeout, aborts the caller signal, asserts the caller really aborted, and only then invokes the captured reject callback with the SDK's RequestTimeoutError. Both signals are therefore already aborted when completePrompt's catch runs, so the test truly pins the first-cause (TimeoutError) classification.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Add a test where the timeout fires after the caller aborts.
The caller-first test rejects synchronously on caller.abort() and never advances the timeout. A classification that returns TimeoutError after a later timeout would still pass. Add a test that aborts the caller, advances the timeout, and only then rejects the request. Expect AbortError.
As per path instructions, "Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases." The current first-cause classification at head returns AbortError for this ordering, so this gap is missing coverage, not a production defect.

Add a regression test near the existing `handler.completePrompt` abort test that
aborts the caller, advances the timeout, and then rejects the pending mocked
request. Assert the request still rejects with `AbortError`, ensuring this
ordering is covered.
Add a live-signal createMessage test that isolates the AbortError name check.
The added createMessage abort tests all abort the caller signal before the SDK error is thrown, so the signal check classifies them. Removing the AbortError name check in isRequestAborted would leave all of them passing. The suggested test also uses the message Request was aborted., which matches the message fallback in isRequestAborted. Use an error message that does not match, so only the name check can classify the error. With a live signal, removing the name check sends the error to captureException, and the test fails.

The test-file guideline requires regression coverage for error paths, including negative and boundary cases. This cancellation classification path needs that coverage.

Add a `createMessage` regression test that verifies an SDK `AbortError` is
classified as an abort while the external signal is still live. Use an error
message that does not match the message fallback, assert the surfaced abort
error and that `mockCaptureException` is not called, so the test specifically
covers the `AbortError` name check.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Test gap: the timeout mock always rejects when its fetch signal aborts. The supplied completePrompt implementation awaits chat.complete directly, so this test does not establish that the deadline settles a request while the SDK is in a non-signal-aware operation.
A completion could remain pending past timeoutMs or caller cancellation while the timeout and in-flight abort tests still pass.
This can occur when: The SDK is sleeping between retries or otherwise leaves chat.complete pending after the forwarded signal aborts.

Flag name: "AbortError" in Object.assign calls too.
abortErrorSelectors matches .name = "AbortError" assignments and DOMException constructors. It does not match an object literal passed to Object.assign, so Object.assign(new Error("x"), { name: "AbortError" }) passes lint. Cover the src registration of the spec @ts-ignore rule.
The @ts-ignore in specs tests lint with a local specConfig that includes apiSpecTsIgnoreConfig. No test loads the exported src config from src/eslint.config.mjs. If apiSpecTsIgnoreConfig is removed from that export, the tests still pass, and the src lint run stops enforcing the rule on provider specs. Add a test that loads the default export of src/eslint.config.mjs and lints a provider spec containing @ts-ignore, asserting that the rule reports it.
Coverage notes
The registration and its test coverage are both new in this PR. The new test should be small: it reuses the existing Linter setup and loads one module. Loading the config adds only a single import, so the effort is low.

Per @edelauna's review, this revision leverages the shared abort-signal work already on main:
createMessage+completePrompt) now useisRequestAborted(error, signal)— which also catches SDK-native abort errors that surface before the signal flag propagates — and throw viacreateAbortError(<provider>).AbortController+addEventListener/removeEventListener+finallycleanup is replaced withRequestConfigBuilder.addMergedSignal(feat(api): introduce RequestConfigBuilder for SDK-agnostic abort signal support #1008) —AbortSignal.anyinternally, no manual listener management.Series alignment check (zdt align check)

mistral string-content yields). A guard before the FIRST yield of a loop iteration is dead code:
the top-of-loop break runs without a suspension point before it, so it can never throw. The
loop-top check + post-loop AbortError cover those sites; the structural kill-tests pin them.
discovery: gemini/mistral vs bare for lite-llm createMessage/completePrompt). Recorded as a
design decision; aligning would widen this PR beyond its unit.

Per the CodeRabbit out-of-diff finding on cold-cache model discovery (
LiteLLMHandler.createMessageawaitsfetchModel()before the abort check):fetchModel()awaits in bothcreateMessageandcompletePromptnow race against the request signal viarejectOnAbort(the shared series helper inutils/abort-signal.ts), and an abort landing while discovery fails is normalized to the standardAbortErrorviaisRequestAborted+createAbortError("LiteLLM").fetchModel()itself is a shared single-flight lookup, so it carries no per-request signal; cancellation is expressed per-request at the caller, and the underlying discovery keeps running so concurrent requests still get the populated cache.New head:

Responding to the maintainer's two inline comments on fork PR 1303. New head:
b94c13c1f.lite-llm.ts,completePrompt): the timeout was previously forwarded to the OpenAI SDK only as the per-attempttimeoutoption while the SDK's default two retries stayed enabled — each retry adds a backoff sleep that is not signal-aware, so a 30ms budget could elapse ~1,530ms across three attempts, exceeding the promised discovery-plus-completion budget. One absolute deadline (start +timeoutMs) is now enforced THROUGH the completion call: a deadline signal for the remaining budget is merged with the caller's signal and passed as the SDK call'ssignal(in-flight attempts abort at the deadline; the SDK's next attempt short-circuits at its pre-flightsignal.abortedcheck), and because the SDK's retry sleep is not signal-aware, the call is additionally raced against the deadline viarejectOnAbortso the caller settles at the deadline even mid-backoff. Retries stay enabled within the remaining budget. Timeout expiry stays distinct from caller cancellation: deadline expiry with the caller still running surfaces asTimeoutError("The LiteLLM completion request timed out") and never masquerades as the cancellationAbortError(the SDK reports deadline expiry as an abort-shapedAPIUserAbortError); a caller abort still yields the standardAbortErrorand wins when both fire. Three regression tests pin this (real-SDK integration test with a hanging fetch stub asserting one attempt / bounded elapsed /TimeoutError; deadline expiry reported as a timeout, not caller cancellation; caller cancellation stillAbortError), and the merged signal+timeout test now pins the deadline-bounded signal the SDK receives. Negative control: reverting the fix turns exactly those tests red.assertSecureGeminiBaseUrlpolicy (helpers plus both call-site guards) and its CWE-319 security test matrix now live in their own PR — upstream PR 2033 (branchfeat/gemini-https-endpoint-policy, basemain) — because the policy changes which custom endpoints are accepted independently of cancellation. This branch keeps cancellation content only: the remaining Gemini diff is the abort-signal bridging andhttpOptionstimeout forwarding.mainto clear the dirty state. The only conflict was the tail oflite-llm.spec.ts(both sides appended blocks; kept both — main's model-catalog scope test and this branch'scompletePromptsuite). Main's model-cache changes (fetchModels/getModelCacheScopeon the ApiHandler interface) auto-merged cleanly alongside this branch's abort changes.Verification at this head: 209 tests green across all six specs this PR touches (

The re-review at head
b94c13c1fopened three threads; all fixed at headd382f33c1.AbortErrorname — so neither a removed wrapper (raw rethrow) nor an abort-path misclassification can pass. Design-contract note: the proposed exactt("common:errors.gemini.generate_stream", ...)equality is not assertable in this environment — i18next is not initialized with resources in unit tests (documented in this spec's sibling telemetry test), sot()returnsundefinedand the provider's wrapped message is""; the proposedtoBe(t(...))comparesundefinedagainst""and fails on green code. Negative control: raw-rethrow and abort-misclassification mutations each turn exactly these two tests red; byte-exact restore returns them green.try/finallywithvi.useRealTimers()in thefinallyblock, matching the neighbouring tests; a failed assertion can no longer leak fake timers into the deadline or discovery-timeout tests.ConditionalExpressionmutant (lite-llm deadline signal branch): collapsed tocallerAbortSignal ? mergeAbortSignals(callerAbortSignal, deadlineSignal) : deadlineSignal—mergeAbortSignalsreturns the primary signal directly when no secondary exists, so all four caller/deadline combinations behave exactly as before and the guarded branch's equivalent mutant is gone; the ternary's own mutants are killed by the existing caller-only and deadline-only tests. No behavior change in production code.Verification at this head: 129/129 green across
gemini.spec.ts+lite-llm.spec.ts; local mutation preflight on the unit delta green (240 valid / 240 killed / 0 survived / 0 noCoverage);tsc --noEmit→ 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with no suppression-count changes;prettier --checkclean on all touched files.Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Six directives removed (gemini.ts 1, lite-llm.ts 4, mistral.ts 1):
OptionalChainingonrequestSignal?.aborted(x3): requestSignal is the result of the merged-signal helper called unconditionally above the check in the same method scope, so the optional chain can never observe nullish - the mutant is equivalent by a local invariant.StringLiteralon the race's providerName "LiteLLM" (x3): every error escaping rejectOnAbort/the deadline race is reclassified to the contract abort error before reaching callers, so the provider label embedded in the intermediate error is unobservable through any public path.Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
